[Class 35] [Also in Group XXVII] A combined starting motor and dynamo for an internal-combustion engine has a hollow armature shaft 1 concentric with the crankshaft A to permit the insertion of a starting handle (not shown) and its direct engagement with starting dogs D on the crank-shaft. The armature shaft is carried on the crank-shaft by a collar 2 whilst the dog member is secured by a flange 4 and a locking ring. The timing case C has a flange 8 for supporting the pole structure M of the machine, Cooling air circulates through the machine from slots 20 in the hollow shaft under the influence of a fan 21 and an extractor plate 24 which draws the air by virtue of the car's forward motion.
