Abstract

564,428. Magnetos. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and WHITEHOUSE, H. E. March 22, 1943, No. 4601. [Class 35] A fly-wheel magneto, particularly for use on motor cycles, comprises a hollow stator e, Figs. 1 and 2, having permanent magnets f and laminated or other iron parts g carrying windings h and provided with salient poles j. A hollow fly-wheel k, secured to the crank-shaft or other engine-driven shaft d, has a peiiphery surrounding the stator and carrying on its inner surface an iron pole system m, preferably laminated, adapted to co-operate with the stator poles for effecting the required magnetic flux changes through the windings. The stator, which may have a number of windings for supplying current for different purposes, is carried by a plate a secured to the engine casing by bolts b. An interrupter n is mounted within the stator and is actuated by a cam p. In the modified construction shown in Fig. 3, the magneto is mounted within a housing q formed on the engine casing and the rim of the flywheel k extends outwardly over the stator, which is carried by a removable cover r of the housing. The shaft d is supported by a bearing s carried by a bracket on the stator, which bracket also serves as a support for the interrupter which is operated by the cam p arranged on the end of the shaft.
