602,616. Circumferentially-adjustable couplings. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and BALMFORTH, N. Aug. 27, 1945, No. 21889. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XIX] Apparatus for circumferentially-adjusting a coupling between two shafts to apply a torque to gear mechanism under test, is characterised in that, to each of the axially-aligned output shafts a, b of the two mechanisms (not shown) to be tested, there is attached a spur-wheel a<1>, b<1> which meshes with an intermediate wheel formed in or carried by an intermediate member d, e, the outer peripheries of the two intermediate members being formed or provided respectively one with right- or left-hand helical teeth and the other with spur teeth which mesh with internal wheels carried by or formed in outer members f, g which are connected to rotate together and are supported on the output shafts , of the two mechanisms, the outer members f, g being so fashioned that between them and the outer ends of the respective intermediate members d, e there are provided spaces h, i which constitute cylinders in which the intermediate members work as pistons and provision being made for the admission of oil under pressure to one or other of the cylinders. The oil is introduced through a passage f<3>, g<3> in the hub of the outer member f, g and endthrust pads or bearings p, r are positioned between the outer members and a stationary housing.
