Abstract
601,790. Friction clutches. FERODO, Ltd., and HALL, W. Nov. 5, 1945, No. 29298. [Class 80 (ii)] An internally or externally splined friction clutch plate is built up of two types of impregnated material consolidated together under heat and pressure without interpenetration, the frictional and splined portions each being composed of a type of material especially suitable for the respective situation. Both portions may comprise asbestos or cotton cloth, with or without interwoven brass or zinc wire, impregnated, in the case of the frictional portion, with a varnish incorporating drying oils with or without a phenol formaldehyde resin and, in the case of the splined portion with a phenol or urea formaldehyde resin varnish. As shown, plates are made up of three discs or rings b, c, d in which splines are to be cut and two rings or discs a, e forming friction surfaces, the whole being pressed up solid in a blank die. The rings may each be built up of several layers of cloth, and may be stamped out solid or formed by bending a piece of bias-cut cloth, which may have scarfed ends, into ring form.
