Abstract

629,618. Friction element construction. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 3, 1946, No. 35790. Convention date, Dec. 20, 1945. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] A friction element for use in brakes, clutches and the like, is comprised of a substantially rigid member 12, which may be a brake shoe or clutch plate, an outer part 14 of friction lining material, and an element 16 of initially dry thermosetting adhesive material, which serves to unite the members 12 and 14 when the assembly is subjected to compression and heating. The element 16 consists of a film of suitable bonding medium, such as phenol-formaldehyde synthetic resin, reinforced by some fibrous material such as bandage gauze, " Japanese " or " Mitscherlich Paper," or by loose fibres of silk, glass, hair or asbestos, which may be aligned under an electrostatic field, and which reinforcement is of negligible thickness such as 0.001 or 0.002 inch. In a modification, the element 16 is given an additional coating of adhesive on one side and this surface is applied to either the brake shoe or lining according to which heats up the more slowly depending on whether an oven or a dielectric field is used.
