Abstract

621,218. Brake friction members. RAYBESTOS-MANHATTAN, Inc. June 28, 1946, No. 19353. Convention date, June 10, 1944. Drawings to Specification. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] A friction member, e.g. a brake shoe, comprises a friction element, a metallic supporting element and an intermediate bonding layer comprising a network or sheet of cellulose fibres, having a thickness of 0.001-0.005 inch, permeated with a heat-hardened or heat-cured binder. Suitable materials for the binder are stated to be phenol-formaldehyde synthetic resins, "Buna" (Registered Trade Mark), Neoprene and resin-oils. The network or sheet may be a felted fibrous sheet of paper such as kraft paper having a thickness of 0.003 inch. The friction element may be removed when desired by soaking the assembly in a strong caustic solution which attacks the fibres. A brake shoe and a conical friction member are described with reference to the drawings.
