Abstract

1,249,922. Moulding brake blocks. FERODO Ltd. 10 June, 1970 [10 March, 1969; 1 Aug., 1969], Nos. 12523/69 and 38759/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] A railway brake block comprises a body 4 of polymer-bonded frictional constituents and a backplate 1 extending over the body and embedded in cured elastomeric material 3 which isolates the backplate from the body, the thickness of the material isolating the backplate being such that squeal of the brakes is substantially reduced or eliminated altogether. The backplate is formed with or carries a part 1 for attachment to a housing. The bonding material in the body may be a phenol-based resin and the elastomeric material one or more nitrile rubber compositions. In a modification the backplate and elastomeric material combination are embedded in the body (Fig. 3, not shown). The brake block is built up in a mould using uncured mixes and the backplate, the assembly then being heated to cure the body and elastomeric materials.
