Abstract
601,579. Electrolytic treatment of fluids. DUBILIER. CONDENSER CO. (1925), Ltd. Feb. 6, 1946, No. 3768. Convention date, June 5. 1945. [Class 41] Apparatus for electrically treating fluid, for example for treating water to reduce formation of scale in boilers &c., of the kind in which the fluid flows over two electrodes' connected to a source of direct current, has means whereby the potential across the electrodes is automatically controlled so that it is maintained substantially constant in spite of variations in the resistivity of the fluid. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a perforated anode 13 is mounted within a coaxial cathode 10 provided with an inlet 18 for liquid and an outlet 11. Branched off from the inlet pipe 18 is a pipe 12. of glass or other insulating material in which are mounted two auxiliary electrodes 20, 21. These electrodes are connected in series with the main electrodes to a dry cell 25, across which is shunted a potentiometer 26. In a modification shown in Fig. 2, the auxiliary electrodes are constituted by an adjustable terminal 33 and a boss 34 on a cup 14 secured to the anode 13. In a further arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the dry cell is housed within the anode 14, one end of which is closed by two members 40, 41 of insulating material. The member 41 has an axially bored extension 43 through which water flows into a cavity 48, the water being discharged through an outlet 44. The inlet and outlet are covered by a metal gauze filter 45 connected to the anode 14. Into the cavity 48 extends the end of a rivet 46 which is connected to the positive terminal of the cell. The extension 43 may be provided with a tubular member which can be exchanged for one of a different-sized bore and an adjustable pin may replace the rivet 46. Specifications 601,576 and 601,578 are referred to.
