Abstract

<PICT:1089458/C6-C7/1> A method of cleaning clogged metering holes, narrow waists, or capillary systems in conducting liquids where the material forming said holes, &c. has a conductivity substantially less than that of the liquid, comprises passing a current, preferably in the form of current pulses, through the clogged holes &c. by means of electrodes disposed in the liquid on either side of the hole, narrow waist, &c. As shown, electrodes 5 and 6 are disposed in an electrolyte 2 on either side of a metering hole 4 of particle-counting apparatus, which consists of vessels 1 and 3 and a conventional counting circuit (not shown) connected to electrode terminals 7, 8. Operation of a change-over switch 9 allows a condenser 10, previously charged by a source 11, to discharge by way of the electrolyte and electrodes. The hole 4 forms a high resistance in this discharge circuit causing gas and steam to develop locally at the site of the clogging which then blows off and disperses the clogging. The condenser may be connected through an amplifier to the switch to obtain the required current density.
