Abstract

600,352. Adjustable transmission lines. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 22. 1943, No. 17461. Convention date, May 12, 1942. [Class 40 (viii)] A unit for insertion in a transmission line to permit adjustment of its effective length comprises two pairs of arcuate conductive strips 40, 41 and 42, 43 which are joined to the transmission line by short cables 48, 49 and are engaged by brushes 56, 56<1> and 57, 57<1> on the ends of diametrally arranged bridging conductors 52, 43 which are rotatable by means of a knob 60. The conductive strips are supported on the outer casing or shield 10 by insulators 46 and each strip is grounded thereto at the end remote from the cable 48 or 49 by a metal block 44. The conductors 52, 53 are supported by insulators 50, 51 on a flat shield 30 mounted on stub shafts 20, 21. In order to regulate the effective length of the unused portions of the strips 40, 41 and 42, 43, they are arranged to be short-circuited by brushes 62, 64 carried by the cross-straps 61 of a frame 22, 23. The distance between the brushes 62, 64 and the brushes 56, 56<1>, 57, 57<1> measured along the strips is preferably a quarter-wavelength, and the frame 22, 23 is made adjustable with respect to the shield 30. A modified construction for use with coaxial lines has only one pair of arcuate strips which are joined to the central conductor on either side, the outer casing or shield being connected to the outer conductor.
