[Class 130] [Also in Group XVII] In a tobacco-feeding apparatus in which tobacco in a hopper 2 is removed by a carded roller 5 to a cigarette-making machine, the movement of the tobacco is assisted by reciprocating bars 9 placed side by side so that the tobacco shorts fall between them. The bars, which are preferably toothed or roughened for at least a third of their length from the roller 5, are mounted on eccentrics 10, 11 and driven by the eccentric 10 so that they move upwardly and forwardly alternately. Surplus tobacco is removed from the roller 5 by a reciprocating toothed blade 13 having a guide 15, a presser 17, and a pinned roller 20, as described in Specification 520,178. The hopper base plate 4 may be mounted on springs 25 and vibrated as described in Specification 549,397. Eccentrics on a shaft 27 are connected by a plate 29 to the plate 4, and by a plate 30 and a weight 31 to a further spring 32. The mounting of the shaft 27 can be adjusted by screws 35 to vary the distance between the end of the plate 4 and the roller 5. The shorts are thus fed down a spring plate 36 to a worm conveyer 38, whence they are blown by a fan 40 through a pipe 41 and spread over the roller 20 by a baffle 42. The feeding of the shorts may also be assisted by arranging the bars 9 close to the plate 4 and providing further bars having carding pins or teeth underneath. These bars are moved downwardly and forwardly alternately by the clockwise-rotating shaft 7. The tobacco is fed to the cigarette-making machine by a picker-roller 23. In a large hopper a second conveyer plate may be provided, the feeding bars being bent to correspond with the angle between the plates. Specification 370,640 also is referred to.
