598,816. Filters. ST.-ANDRE, R. E. Sept. 11, 1945, No. 23438. Convention date, Jan. 10, 1944. [Class 46] Oil is forced by a pump 2, Fig. 4, through a filter 101 into a chamber 11 which has a deformable wall, so that the oil expands the chamber before passing through an outlet valve 12. When the oil is cold or thick it is byepassed through a valve 13. If the pump 2 stops, the liquid in the chamber 11 is forced but by means of a spring 7<SP>3</SP>, so that it cleans the filter 101. In a modification shown in Fig. 5, the spring is replaced by a weight 7<SP>4</SP>, the outlet valve is replaced by an orifice 3<SP>1</SP> and the byepass valve is dispensed with. In another modification, the chamber comprises a cylinder provided with a piston which is displaced against spring action, as the chamber fills with liquid. In a further construction, the chamber has a flat rubber base which stretches to accommodate filtered liquid and returns to normal size when the liquid pressure is withdrawn.
