Abstract
541,795. Pump relief valves. TOWLER, J. M., and TOWLER, F. H. June 20, 1940, No. 10604. [Class 135] In an automatically acting pressure relief valve for the delivery main of an oil or other liquid pump, the pumped liquid has constant access to the two sides of a differential piston e, simultaneously, the liquid pressure on the larger piston area tending to open the plunger valve a against the liquid pressure on the lesser piston area combined with the pressure of a spring l, and the opening of the valve produces a reduction in the pressure of the liquid acting against the lesser piston area relatively to the pressure of the liquid acting against the larger piston area, whereby the effective pressure tending to open the valve is thereby increased. The plunger bar a is operatively connected to the piston e and has a normally closed orifice which when opened permits liquid to flow therethrough from the interior of the piston cylinder on the side of the piston of lesser area. Preferably the relief outlet comprises a constricted passage which is closed at one end and formed by a helical groove c on the exterior of the plunger a over a portion of its length. Alternatively, the relief outlet may be formed by an axial passage in the plunger with radial holes or slots at both ends for the inlet and outlet of the liquid. The pressure liquid passes to the two sides of the piston e through orifices j, k in the piston cylinder f.
