Abstract
596,964. Diffusion pumps. LIEBMANN, G., and CATHODEON, Ltd. Aug. 8, 1945, No. 20263. [Class 71] In a high vacuum diffusion pump of the jet type, the outer vacuum-tight casing 1 of the pump assembly is made from a metal having a low thermal conductivity not exceeding 0.07 gm. cal. per sec. per cm.<2> per degrees C. per cm. The pump comprises a lagged electricallyheated boiler chamber 4 supporting oil vapour guide tubes 15, 16 which with cowls 23, 28 form jets 24, 29. Baffles 31, 34 of relatively high thermal conductivity supported by the casing serve to condense oil vapour and prevent it from entering the vessel to be evacuated which is connected to the casing top. The casing wall is 1 mm. thick, being reduced to .05 mm. at the ends 2, 3 and on account of its low thermal conductivity avoids the necessity of a watercooled jacket as is usual in such pumps. A backing pump is connected to a conduit 9.
