Abstract
596,195. Cooling cylinders. PESCARA, R. P. July 24, 1945, No. 18977. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1944. [Class 7 (ii)] The cooling jacket of a cylinder having opposed pistons controlling inlet and exhaust ports, is extended beyond the ports by'sleeves 6<0>, 6<00> which have small clearance with the cylinder liner, rapid flow of the cooling liquid being thus produced. Cooling liquid is supplied by pipes 10<0>, 10<00> and passed by passages 16<0>, 16<00> drilled in the flanges between the ports to a jacket 11 which supports the cylinder and which has an outlet 12. Alternatively this outlet may be omitted, the cooling liquid entering at one end of the jacket and leaving at the other. The sleeve 6<00> adjacent the exhaust ports is insulated from the exhaust passage 21 by an air space formed by a sheath 22, expansible sealing joints being provided. The coolant is further directed by tubular baffles 30 which may have ring plates opposite the ends of. the passages 16<0>, 16<00> notches being provided in the ring plates adjacent the ports. The exit passages for the coolant comprise blind holes 18<0> 19" drilled in the liner flange but in the modification in which the outlet 12 is omitted holes 18<0> are drilled right through the flange.
