[Class 7 (ii)] An internal-combustion engine has a distributer plate fitted within the cylinder head jacket close to the surface to be cooled, the plate being provided with openings arranged so that the coolant flow is directed around selected parts such as plug apertures, valve-stem guides, and exhaust passages and hot spots are eliminated. In the application to a side-valve engine, Figs. 1 and 3, a detachable head 5 secured by bolts 6 to the cylinder block 1 is closed on its upper face by a separate cover-plate 9 and packing 10, the cover-plate being secured by bolts 14. Flow of coolant from the cylinder jacket 2 passes to the head through apertures 18, 19. Flow in the head is controlled by a distributer plate 20, 27 secured to the coverplate by screws 24 arranged to provide shallow passages 22 for flow over the combustion chamber. The lower section which forms the combustion chamber 49 is fitted with a distributer plate 54 which directs flow round the valve ports and spark-plug bosses. A second plate 60 between the head sections directs flow to the valve guide and thence to the outflow pipe 63. The push rods pass through tubes 66. In another modification, for a side-valve engine, the distributer plates may be one-piece sheet metal pressings.
