Abstract
595,386. Winches. RUSTON-BUCYRUS; Ltd. June 21, 1945, No. 15822. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1944. [Class 78(v)]. Winch mechanism for actuating a clamshell excavator includes a continuouslyrotating member, a closing-drum clutch for coupling the rotating member to a closing- drum, a holding-drum clutch for coupling the rotating member to a holding-drum, and a one-way interlock operatively connecting the lever of the closing-drum clutch to the holding-drum clutch in such manner that moving the lever to set or release the closing-drum clutch will set or release the holding-drum clutch' while leaving the lever of the latter clutch free to operate that clutch without operating the closing clutch. The closing drum 11 has a brake (not shown) and clutch 16 with band 17 dead ended at 18, the live end 19 being connected to a booster drum 24 having a band 25. for imparting the rotation of a constantly rotating shaft 13 to the closing-drum which operates a closing line 14. The closing- drum clutch lever 27 sets the band 25 and a holding-drum brake and clutch 34 with band 33 attached to a spider 35 keyed to the shaft 13 imparts the rotation of the shaft to a holding-drum 12 operating holding line 29, which can also be actuated by holding-drum clutch lever 30 by means of booster-drum 32 and band 31 when it is desired to raise the bucket open and empty. A one-way interlock operatively connects the closing-drum clutch lever 27 to the holding-drum clutch 33, 34 so that by moving lever 27 to set or release the closing-drum clutch 16, 17, the holding- drum clutch 33, 34, is set or released, and the holding-drum clutch lever is free to operate the holding-drum clutch without operating the closing-drum clutch. The booster drum 32 is retarded and clutch 33, 34 is set by lever 41 which operates through rod 39, spring 40 and bell crank 37 and shoe 36. When the lever 27 operates clutch 16, 17 the shoe 36 is loosely set on booster drum 32 yieldably setting clutch 33, 34, causing the drum 12 to take up slack in line 29: In a variation the shoe 36 is without lining and bears on part of the band 31 and in another variation shoes replace booster bands 25 and 31. Spring 40 then bears directly on the lever 27 and rod 39 causes the lever to bear on a pin in the chain of control of the booster-drum 32.
