Abstract
595,117. Motor power plant; speed governors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., CHITTENDEN, J. P., and WELSH R. J. Oct. 16, 1942, No. 14498. [Classes 57 and 110 (iii)] A turbine, or other prime mover, is supplied by the exhaust gas, and/or compressed air, of one or more floating piston internal - combustion engines driving compressors, the supply of gas to the turbine being regulated in accordance with its speed and the pressure of gas in the supply pipe. Fig. 1 shows a turbine 25 supplied with (a) air only from the compressors, (b) exhaust gas from the engines, or (c) a mixture of the two having a gas supply pipe 23 leading from engines 22. A governor 28 controls the axial position of a rod 28c and so regulates the supply of fluid to, or exhaust from, a pipe 31 supplying servo-motors 32. The latter control the position of racks 10a of fuel pumps 10 and so regulate the output of the internal-combustion engines. A pipe 24 allows gas in the pipe 23 to act on a piston 34 and oppose the pressure of a spring 29 acting on the rod 28c. Fig. 4 shows a modified arrangement, the rod 28c, and the rod of piston 34, being pivotally connected to a lever 40. Individual engines 22 may be stopped or started up while the others are running.
