Abstract

1,042,501. Gas turbine plant axial-flow compressors. RICHARDSONS, WESTGARTH & CO. Ltd. Sept. 14, 1962 [Sept. 14, 1961], No. 33021/61. Headings F1C, FIG and FIT. In a gas turbine installation the inlet side of the turbine is connected to a storage reservoir for compressed air through one or more compressors having an overall pressure ratio which is substantially less than that of the turbine. When generating electricity an alternator and motor 12 is driven by a gas turbine 10 having oil-fired combustion chambers 60 within its casing and being supplied with compressed air from a storage chamber, such as an underground cavern 26. The air is supplied through a pair of parallel connected booster compressors 20, 22 of axial-flow or centrifugal constant speed type. These compressors are controlled as by adjustable stator blades or a variable by-pass to compensate for the gradual fall in pressure in the cavern 26 and thereby supply air a substantially constant pressure to the turbine. Alternatively, the boost may be provided by a compressor driven by an auxiliary turbine which is connected in parallel with the main turbine and controlled by throttling its air supply. Compressors 16, 18, which are redundant during generation, are evacuated by an auxiliary motor-driven compressor 54 to reduce power losses. The installation can be started by supplying air to the turbine inlet from the cavern 26. During off-peak hours the alternator and motor 12 functions as a motor to re-charge the cavern with air compressed successively in compressors 16, 18, 22 provided with intercoolers 32, 35. The compressors 16, 18 may be integral with the intercooler 32, Fig. 2 (not shown). The compressor 20 and turbine 10, which are redundant during re-charging, are evacuated by an auxiliary compressor 46 to reduce power losses, the exhaust air from the turbine then passing through a by-pass 38 and intercooler 40 to the compressor 20. Alternatively, the compressor 20 and turbine 10 are connected to an auxiliary chamber evacuated during generation by the compressors 16, 18, or the compressor inlet and turbine outlet are opened to atmosphere and fuel is burned in combustion chambers 60. For part-load operation (about ¥ load) of the installation during generation, the compressors 16, 18 and 22 may supply some of the air to the turbine. A clutch or similar connection may exist between the turbine 10 and compressors 20, 22. When the storage chamber is out of use the compressors 16, 18 supply air to the turbine 10.
