Abstract

593,802. Rotary plug valves. CARTER, S. C. Dec. 12, 1944, No. 24925. [Class 135] A rotary plug valve having packing 15 surrounding ports 20 in the casing has a member 62 slidable in the plug 14 to occupy a port 30 therein, so that the plug, when rotated presents a smooth surface to the, packing and does not cause damage thereto. As shown, the valve has one inlet port 22 and four outlet ports 20, as seen in Fig. 4, which is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, communication between the inlet port and any of the outlet ports being by way of a passage 30a and the port 30 in the plug. Movement of the member 62 is effected by an eccentric pin 75 engaging a slot 76 in the member 62, the pin 75 being formed on a spindle 73 mounted for rotation in the plug, and operable by a lever 80 pivoted, about a pin 81 in a block 86 fixed to the spindle. A finger 84 carried by the lever 80 engages a notch 83 on an arm 82 keyed to a hollow stem 70 integral with the plug, whereby the spindle 73 and the stem 70 may be rotated together so that the member 62 remains in the port 30 when the plug is rotated. An inwardly formed flange 85 at the top of the valve casing prevents the finger 84 from being disengaged from the notch 83, except when the port 30 in the plug is in register with one of the outlet ports 20, when one of four slots 90 in the flange permits the lever 80 to be raised about the pin 81 so that the spindle 73 can then be rotated through 180 degrees independently of the plug, to remove the member 62 from the port 30, and permit the passage of fluid.
