Abstract

774,828. Valves. KLAREN. C., and MINNEMA, J. March 21, 1955, No. 8197/55. Class 135. In a valve comprising a closure member 2, Fig. 1, of rubber or other flexible material in the form of a bag which has its free edge sealed to the valve casing 1 and a presser 16 located in the bag and adapted to press the latter against the wall of the casing to close one of a number of orifices therein, the presser 16 is rotatable about an axis coincident with that of the bag 2 and is only operable in preselected positions to close the orifice. The flanges 3-4 of the bag 2 and a ring 5, respectively, are clamped between a nut 6 and the conical valve casing 1, the ring 5 having a part 7 rotatable therein to position the presser 16 relative to the orifice to be closed, which part is retained by an abutment 8 and a threaded collar 10; the part 7 has two parallel depending ribs 11 between which an intermediate element 13 embodying a projection 14 is pivoted on a pin 12, the element being also disposed between two ribs 15 on the presser 16 and pivotally connected thereto by a pin 17. Springs 18 interconnect the ribs 11 and 15. A lever 21 fixed to a stem 20 rotatable in the part 7 is turned until a stub 27 on a spring- loaded spindle 26 is aligned with a groove 28 in the ring 5, the spindle entering the groove upon operating a blade 25 pivoted to the lever 21, whereupon further rotation of the latter is prevented until the blade 25 is again pivoted to rock the element 13 and withdraw the projection 14 from a recess 23 in the stem 20; the lever 21 can now be further rotated, independently of the part 7, to complete 180 degrees of movement so that an inclined face on the stem 20 acts on the projection 14 to pivot the element 13 and hence cause the presser 16 to be moved parallel to its original position towards the orifice to be closed, the projection coming to rest against a horizontal face 22 of the stem. The blade 25 is broad enough to permit of the projection 14 being below the inclined stem face before the spindle 26 is entirely released as a result of the blade 25 being rotated by the lever 21 away from the spindle. The projection may incorporate a screw to permit of adjustment of the pressure exerted on the bag 2. In a modification, the presser 40, Fig. 2, is moved laterally by a cam 43 on a shaft 41 rotatable by a lever 49 or a hand wheel, not shown, the shaft 41 being located in a sleeve 35 which may also be rotated to adjust the direction of the presser movement relative to the orifice to be closed. In a recess of the sleeve 35 is pivoted a member 45 adapted to engage recesses 46 in a fixed ring 32 to lock the sleeve 35, from which recesses the member 45 can only be removed when a groove 47 in the shaft 41 is aligned therewith. In a further modification, Fig. 7, not shown, the valve casing and bag are cylindrical whilst a sleeve is inserted between the bag and presser which sleeve may support all or part of the bag; the internal and external radii of the latter are different. The pipes 50 and 51, Fig. 5, leading into the valve casing, are tangential thereto, the bag 2 closing either pipe, as shown by the lines 52 and 53, respectively, indicating the directions of presser movement. In its open position the valve is rinsed by water from either pipe which is driven round the bag by the edges 54; the pipes adjacent the valve casing are flattened but their cross-sections remain constant. The valve which may be of the two or multi-way type may be arranged to simultaneously close more than one branch.
