Abstract
Hydrocarbon oil fractions which have been washed with acid and then neutralised, are further refined by distillation in the presence of a small quantity of a substance soluble in the fraction and capable of reacting with acid to yield a neutral salt. In the refining of a "light solvents" naphtha fraction with an end point of 170 DEG C., it is acid washed and neutralised, and then 0.2 per cent. by weight of pyridine bases which have been previously heated to 185 DEG C. to drive off lighter fractions, is added and the mixture submitted to distillation. The addition of 0.1 per cent. of the same heavy pyridine bases to an acid-washed and neutralised coal-tar naphtha has been found to reduce the acidity formed on distillation by 50 per cent. Sodium oleate and calcium resinate are also referred to as efficient corrosion inhibitors.
