Abstract

In the sulphuric acid treatment of hydrocarbons, a polymer, as defined below, is intimately mixed with the acid prior to its introduction to the reaction zone to assist breaking of p acid-hydrocarbon emulsions. The polymer is the non-gaseous product obtained by diluting spent acid, from a sulphuric acid treatment of a hydrocarbon, with a substantial proportion of water while agitating and heating to boiling, and thereafter allowing to settle, preferably for a long period not substantially above 4 hours, and separating the supernatant layer. In the alkylation of isoparaffins with olefins, spent acid may be diluted to about 50 per cent, as by addition to steam condensate while agitating and boiling, allowed to settle for 4 hours, and the polymer layer separated. It may be dissolved in oil if too viscous for pumping. It is added to fresh acid in amounts which are generally not above 5 per cent by weight. Sulphuric acid refining of hydrocarbons is also referred to.
