Abstract

Alkyl chlorides are prepared by contacting hydrogen chloride with alkenes or alkene-containing mixtures in the liquid state, in which substantially anhydrous bismuth or antimony trichloride is kept suspended. In examples: (1) hydrogen chloride is passed into hexadecene containing anhydrous bismuth chloride until it is no longer absorbed, the product diluted with pentane and purified as usual; (2) a fraction containing decene (obtained by cracking white paraffin wax in the vapour phase) is treated as in (1); (3) tetraisobutene (prepared from diisobutene by polymerization with sulphuric acid) is treated as in (1); (4) ethyl chloride is prepared by passing hydrogen chloride into liquid ethene, containing anhydrous bismuth chloride, in a closed vessel.
