517,758. Isomerization of butane. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Aug. 4, 1938, No. 11481/39. Convention date, Aug. 18, 1937. Divided out' of 23102/38. [Class 2 (iii)] Isobutane is prepared by continuously passing n-butane or mixtures containing it and substantially free from olefines at below about 200‹C. over a solid catalyst comprising aluminium chloride and a carrier, e.g. pumice, silica or " Permutite " (Registered Trade Mark), with such a short contact time that no or substantially no decomposition and formation of higher boiling products takes place. Ordinarily, elevated, or reduced pressure may be used. Small amounts of hydrogen halide, preferably hydrogen chloride, and/or water may be present. The process is carried out in the gas phase. In an example, a mixture of butanes is passed at 150‹C. with a contact time of 20 secs over a mixture of aluminium chloride and ground pumice stone. Specifications 498,512 and 516,659 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the process may be effected in the liquid phase. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
