[Class 46] A portable apparatus for filtering liquids comprises a manually-operable pump having a discharge conduit associated with the discharge port, a filter housing directly connected to the pump at its inlet port, and a replaceable filter cartridge within the housing. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a hand pump 10 is connected by a hollow member 20 to a housing 16 for a filter cartridge 13. The cartridge comprises a metal sheet 24 containing two porous rigid filters 11 which may be of carborundum, between which is confined granular filtering material 24 such as asbestos, diatomaceous earth, or activated carbon. The housing 16 has a cover 14 with an aperture containing a coarse screen 49. The member 20 and the pump piston 26 are provided with valves 37, 34 for passage of filtered liquid during operation of the pump, the liquid being discharged through a flexible pipe 41 rotatably mounted on a cap 31. In a modification shown in Fig. 6 the filtering cartridge consists of two cup-shaped filters 11<SP>1</SP> between which is the granular material 25<SP>1</SP>.
