Abstract
556,771. Filters. HALSTEAD, P. E. Jan. 19, 1942, No. 765. [Class 46] In a filter, particularly for incorporation in the lubricating system of an I.C. engine, in which the liquid passes through a filtering medium and the filtered liquid passes partly direct to an outlet and partly through a second filtering medium to a second outlet, a tubular member extends through both filtering media and provides communication between the outlet side of the second filtering medium and the second outlet. As shown in Fig. 1, the media 9, 17 are housed in separate compartments of a casing 1 having end caps 5, 6 detachably secured by bolts 3, 4 screwed into the tube 2. The medium, 9 is a strainer comprising felt wire guaze or the like and held by a spring 15 between gaskets 12, 13 on an end plate 14 and the dividing plate 7. The medium 17 consists of a porous mass, e.g. cotton waste, preferably impregnated with triethylolamine, in a cartridge formed of perforated tubes 18, 21 between end plates 19, 20. The cartridge is held by a spring 29 against an abutment 28 on the tube 2, the ends of the tube 21 being sealed by gaskets 26, 27. Oil from the inlet 16 passes through the strainer 9, thence partly to an outlet 31 leading to the engine bearings and partly through the cartridge 17 and holes 32 in the tube 2 to a bore 33 in the plug 4 leading to the engine sump. The bore 33 is restricted at 39 to control the preparation of oil passing through the cartridge 17. The inlet 16 and outlet 31 are connected by a tube 34 with a spring-pressed ball valve 31 for by-passing the strainer 9 when the pressure exceeds a predetermined value. The strainer may be rotatable against a scraper for cleaning. A magnet may be incorporated for removing iron and steel particles. In the preferred form, shown in Fig. 4, the strainer 112, supported by a cylindrical aperture member 111, surrounds the cartridge 114 in a casing 101 having a cover 120 detachably secured by a bolt 127 screwed into the tube 107 welded to a boss 104 on a closure plate 105 welded to the casing. The member 111 is held against an oil delivery plate 125 by a spring 108 below the end plate 109. The ends of the tube 116 are closed by gaskets 118, 119 and a spring washer 128 is disposed between the gasket 119 and a gasket 129. The cover 120 comprises a depending wall 123 and lugs 124, Fig. 6, to which the plate 125 is secured by screws 126, and a securing flange 130, Fig. 2. Oil passes from an inlet 132 downwardly through a passage 133 and over the plate 125 to the outside of the strainer 112, part of the filtered oil passing through an opening 134 in the plate and a passage 135 into the outlet 136 and part passing through the cartridge 114, the tube 107, and axial and transverse bores 138, 139 in the bolt 127 to the second outlet 140. The inlet and outlet 132, 136 are connected by a transverse passage with a sliding spring-pressed by-pass valve in a housing 144. Cartridges known under the Registered Trade Mark "Fram" may be used.
