[Class 46] A filter apparatus for field service and like uses comprises a double acting piston type pump 1 to the delivery of which is secured an edge filter comprising one or more filter elements located about a central drainage member 32 and normally covered by a layer of finely pulverulent material. The pump shown has an inlet 10 fitted with pivotally mounted feet and with a length of canvas or rubber tubing 13 which carries a strainer 14 and a float 15. The pump barrel is secured to the filter chamber 21 by a member 17 which embraces both and which has an aperture registering with the discharge outlet of the pump. A tube 20 leads from this aperture to the base of the filter chamber. A similar member embracing both the pump barrel and chamber 21 is formed with pairs of lugs 23 carrying pivoted screws 24 which, as shown in Fig. 3, enter lugs 27 on the head 28 of the filter. Fly nuts 26 on the screws 24 clamp the filter head in position. The head provides a chamber normally closed by a cap 30, and is screw-threaded to engage the upper portion of the control drainage element 32. The latter passes through the filter elements 37 terminating in a head 35 and is formed with a number of grooves 33 for the passage of the filtered liquid. A serrated washer 36 between the head 35 and filter elements acts as a distributor for the liquid and can also be used to remove the filter bed deposited on the filter elements when the parts are withdrawn from the chamber. One of the pivoted feet being formed, with a slot can also be used as a tool for removing the.cap 30. The complete device is adapted to be carried in a canvas case fitted with a sling and containing tins for holding filtering powder and sterilising and taste removing or modifying material.
