Abstract

A method of producing a modified alkaline earth metal hydroxide comprises compounding in the dry state a major portion of an alkaline earth metal hydroxide with a minor portion of an alkali metal carbonate and/or silicate, moistening and heating the ingredients to convert the alkali metal salt to the hydroxide and to transform a minor portion of the alkaline earth metal hydroxide to a carbonate and/or silicate to function as a cementing medium for imparting rigidity and coherence to the mass. The ingredients may include (a) a substance, e.g., zinc, aluminium, magnesium or silicon, which during the heating evolves a gas for enhancing the porosity of the mass, and (b) a gas dispersal agent, e.g., Kieselguhr. The preferred alkaline earth metal is calcium and the alkali metal-sodium.ALSO:A method of producing a porous composition comprises compounding in the dry state a major portion of an alkaline earth-metal hydroxide with a minor portion of an alkali metal carbonate and/or silicate, moistening and heating the ingredients to convert the alkali metal salt to the hydroxide and to transform a minor portion of the alkaline earth metal hydroxide to a carbonate and/or silicate to function as a cementing medium for imparting rigidity and coherence to the mass.
