Abstract
591,233. Chairs &c. LEA BRIDGE INDUSTRIES, Ltd., and INGRAM, G. Dec. 8, 1944, No. 24585. [Classes 52 (ii) and 52 (iv)] A metal framework for an upholstered chair or settee comprises separate skeleton units for the arms 12 and the seat and back 19, 18 secured together as by lugs 17, 21 and bolts. The framework for the seat and back comprising metal framing bent to oblong shape with rounded corners the two longer sides being bent to an obtuse angle midway of their length and joined by transverse members 23, 24. A front fender plate 25 is secured to lugs 27 on the seat frame. Such arm unit comprises a bottom plate 10 carrying two inverted U-shaped tubes connected by curved metal plates 14, 15 at the corners, the inside tubes having transverse members 16 for supporting the seat. In a modification the back is separate from the seat and connected to it by spigot and socket joints. Spring surfaces may be attached to the seat and back frames. The upholstery may be securedto the frames by adhesive as described in Specification 591,261 or tacked to wooden inserts dn the frame tubes, the tubes being split to expose the wood where necessary. Various means for detachably connecting the seat frame to the arm frames are described including studs and keyhole slots, spring clamps embracing the tubes, dovetail ridge and groove, spigot with spring-pressed balls taking into a recessed socket, or a spring stud 47, Fig. 6, welded to one member and taking a slot 44 in the other member.
