Abstract

1,177,324. Chairs. KNOLL ASSOCIATES Inc. 12 Feb., 1968 [31 March, 1967], No. 6886/68. Heading A4H. A chair includes an underframe which supports a unitary, moulded plastics shell 50 defining both a seat and back, each frame including two h-shaped side sections of laminated wood interconnected by braces 20, 22, each side section being formed by gluing together rear and front parts 12a, 12b, along the length of their adjacent limbs 25, 27. and the shell 50 being secured around its periphery to the underframe. In one embodiment, Fig. 3 the shell 50 is secured to the braces 20, 22 and to parts 19, 25 of the side sections by spaced staples (56, Fig. 9). Rectangular frames 24 defining arms may be screwed to the side sections. The shell 50 may be upholstered with foam rubber. In another embodiment, Fig. 12, the shell is moulded with integral, hollow lugs 50g or with a continuous rib which are respectively engaged and glued in holes 62 or a rib in the frame. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, the shell 50 is in the form of a "bucket" seat with a peripheral flange 50k secured to the frame 10.
