Abstract
591,107. Twisting &c. glass fibres. THURSTON, A. P. (Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation). Aug. 18, 1944, No. 15803. [Class 120 (ii)] Apparatus for twisting and winding yarns from glass fibres, including a support for a spool 15 upon which the fibres are to be wound, a cap 17 of inverted U-form in cross section mounted for rotation about a vertical axis centrally of the spool support, a guide 16 being secured to the lower edge of the cap, is characterised in that the spool is frictionally supported against rotation on a sleeve 25 slidable on a column 20, the sleeve being supported and secured to rods 33 which, in turn, are connected to slide blocks 34 mounted in slideways 35 in the support, the slide blocks carrying rollers 50 which engage with pivotally mounted arms 49 actuated by a cam 38 driven by a motor 40. The spool 15 is frictionally supported against rotation by a plate 26. The arms 49 form part of a lever 45 pivoted at 46 and oscillated by the cam 38 through rollers 48a on a slide 48, the cam 38 being driven through reduction gear 41. The flyer 17 is removably attached to a spindle 18 driven by an electric motor 28 of the variable speed type. The spindle 18 runs in bearings 19 in the stationary tube 20 fixed to a plate 21 on the machine frame. A key 36 on the tube 20 engaging a keyway in the plate 26 prevents any rotation of the plate. A spring 51 at the pivot 46 holds the lever 45 in contact with the camoperated rollers 48, 48a. Specification 516,953 is referred to.
