[Class 81 (ii)] A catamenial tampon is made so that the surface of its insertion or front end is formed by the original surface of a suitable web of cotton wool &c. or by a gauze protective layer covering the absorbent material and in which three or more limbs of the absorbent material extending longitudinally from the insertion end ,are compacted together and secured to one another and to a withdrawal cord. A blank is made from two strips 1, 1 (Fig. 2) of gauze (surgical gauze, muslin or other suitable textile material), upon which are laid two strips 2, 2 of cotton wool. The four limbs are folded together with the cotton wool inside and compacted into cylindical form with the centre of the blank forming the domed insertion end. The withdrawal cord is tied round the ends of the gauze with the whole of the cotton wool enclosed within. A tampon also may be formed from a cross -or star shaped blank with three or-more limbs of web cotton wool (almost square in cross section) and preferably the web may be laid on or covered by a layer of gauze. The cord and the ends of the limbs may be stitched or otherwise suitably secured together if desired, and the material may be cut in one piece instead of strips placed crosswise.
