In order to control the lateral spread of fluid in a catamenial pad the central area is surrounded by a continuous line along which the absorbent material is highly compressed, the area enclosed preferably being in the shape of a sector of a circle. In one form the pad, of loose cellulose fibres or absorbent pulp powder, is compressed along the line 11 so that outward passage of fluid past this line is minimised. Preferably the outer face of the absorbent pad 12 is covered by a liquid repellent sheet formed for example of sized paper while the front face carries a sheet of absorbent paper 13. The. whole is wrapped in a sheet of semi-repellent paper perforated on the upper face by holes 16 and is then enclosed in a gauze wrapper 17. In place of a gauze wrapper a soft, non-woven cloth may be formed by arranging textile fibres as a web and uniting them by spaced areas of adhesive.
