Abstract

938,373. Catamenial pads. ROBINSON & SONS Ltd. Jan. 20, 1960 [Feb. 11, 1959], No. 4727/59. Class 81 (2). A sanitary towel comprises an absorbent fibrous pad 1 to one face of which a waterproof sheet 2 is secured by means excluding mere frictional location of the sheet at the face of the pad, so that end areas 1c, 1d of the pad are exposed, and a wrapper enclosing the sheet and the pad. The waterproof sheet which is made of polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride or nylon is secured by sewing, or adhesive, to end tabs 3, 4 which are themselves secured to the pad ends by an embossing operation. Alternatively the end tabs may be provided by a layer which is co-extensive with the pad and has the waterproof sheet secured to it or the waterproof sheet may be stuck to threads or strips stuck to the pad. The waterproof sheet may additionally be covered by a layer of coloured cellulose wadding or crepe tissue which is co-extensive with the pad. The whole pad is wrapped in knitted or woven gauze and has eyelet holes each surrounded by a compressed area. The body of the pad is made of multiply-cellulose wadding or crepe paper tissue.
