Abstract

871,435. Surgical swabs. KIMBERLYCLARK CORPORATION. May 30, 1958 [June 10, 1957 (2)], No. 17372/58. Class 81 (2). A reversible swab or dressing is made from a wad of absorbent material and at least one layer of loosely felted fibrous material of less capillarity than the main pad. Thus it may comprise a main absorbent pad 22 of fluff material and a control layer 24 consisting of a blend of wettable and non-wettable fibres such as to have the desired, relatively low capillarity. The whole swab is enclosed in a gauze or similar wrapper 20. With such a dressing, fluid reaching the lower face of the main pad 22 does not tend to pass into the layer 24, owing to the latter's lower capillarity, but tends to spread uniformly through the pad 22. If such a pad is used with the lower face against the body, the accumulation of fluid on the sheet 24 ultimately causes it to percolate through, whereupon it is readily absorbed by the pad 22. Because of this effect a pad may have a control layer on each face while, in further modifications, additional layers of crepe tissue may be placed outside such control layers and/or a spreader element of waxed tissue may be centrally placed in the assembly.
