Abstract

Surgical dressings comprise an absorbent pad having one one or both sides thereof a face of smooth non-metallic film rendered liquid permeable by the provision of fine cuts or punctures therein. The pad may be formed of cotton or other fibrous material, for example, wood pulp fibre or of a sponge of rubber or hydrated cellulose. The film may be wrapped around or sewn or coated on to the pad. The cuts or punctures are so made as to direct the edges thereof away from the wound and leave a smooth surface; the punctures are numerous and preferably less than 1 millimetre in diameter; the cuts are preferably from 1-3 millimetres long and from 1-3 per square centimetres are made. When sponge is employed, the surface may be rendered smooth by incorporating talc or other absorbent powder or soluble materials which are subsequently washed out. In a modification, the dressing may comprise two layers of rubber or regenerated cellulose sponge, one layer having very small pores and replacing the film; the pores of this layer may be filled with talc or other absorbent powder. Disinfectants or medicines may be sprayed on to or otherwise incorporated with the film or sponge surface or the dressing itself. The dressing may be held in place by bandages or adhesives.
