Abstract

1394742 Surgical dressings MEDICAL ALGINATES LTD 3 Aug 1973 [3 Aug 1972] 36406/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division B5] Surgical dressing material comprises a knitted alginic gauze adhered to a fibrous backing the dressing having lower flexibility and stretchability than the gauze. The gauze may be of converted calcium alginate in which part of the calcium has been replaced by sodium, preferably to yield a material of calcium content 3-5 wt % and pH 4-7. The backing may be a woven, non-woven or knitted fabric, preferably muslin or lint, and may be adhered to an absorbent synthetic foam. The gauze and backing may be bonded by dampening the surface of the backing and ironing the two materials together in a commercial roller ironer after leaving for 1-2 minutes if necessary, adhesion taking place during drying. The layers may be separated under water. The dressing material may be used to form adhesive plasters.
