782,504. Surgical dressings. SOC. ANON. DE L'ANCIENNE MAISON DEVAUD, KUNSTLE & CIE. Feb. 16, 1954 [Dec. 24, 1953], No. 4492/54. Class 81 (2). A surgical dressing comprises, on at least a portion of its surface which is adapted to contact the skin, a layer of synthetic non-absorbent fabric and in contact with this layer, at least one layer of absorbent material. The non- absorbent fabric 1 is knitted or woven svnthetic material, e.g. nylon or polyvinyl chloride, which is placed in contact with the body. The absorbent material 2 is cellulose, a cellulose compound or cotton. An impermeable backing 3 which may extend beyond the dressing and be provided with adhesive 5 for securing the dressing to the body, may be provided. The dressing may be in the form of a catamenial appliance (Fig. 4), absorbent material 2 being contained within a tubular layer of non-absorbent fabric 1 or a tube (not shown) formed partly from non-absorbent material 1 and partly from absorbent or impermeable material. Alternatively an impermeable layer may be enclosed with the absorbent material 2 in a knitted or woven tube of non-absorbent material (not shown).
