Abstract

589,666. Cleaning metals. GARRINGTON & SONS, Ltd., J., and SHARMAN, J. C. Dec. 8, 1944, No. 24569. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] The ends of a steel billet are rectified before drop forging or hot pressing by subjecting the billet to a preliminary endwise compression between dies so arranged as to flatten the ends of the billet and to bring the axis of the billet into accurate perpendicularity with both such ends. The lower die 8 has a shallow recess 9 in which seats the end of the billet 7 which has been cropped from a bar. The upper die 5 is formed with a comparatively deep recess 6 having a taper of not more than 20‹. As the upper die descends, the tapered wall of the recess 6 will engage and tilt the billet as shown in Fig. 2 and will finally compress the billet so that its ends are flat and accurately at rightangles to its axis as shown in Fig. 3. The compression serves to loosen the scale from the surface of the billet and scale so loosened is removed by an air blast from a nozzle 14.
