Abstract
616,042. Forging. FORGINGS & PRESSWORK (BIRMINGHAM), Ltd., and JONES, A. Aug. 22, 1946, No. 25036. [Class 83 (iv)] Dies.-In forging in succession at least two articles from a billet, the dies are arranged to provide a neck or tag between the first article to be forged and the remainder of the billet, the tag being used to hold the billet while the last portion is being forged. In forging two articles from a billet 17, the billet is first placed in a portion 26 of the forging die so that a ridge 28 forms a neck 13 on the billet. One end of the billet is then placed in the centre portion 30 having an opening 31 for the end of the adjacent portion of the billet. The article 20 is then forged and is joined by means of a flash 33 to a circular neck or tag 15 formed by a portion 32 of the die. After the flash has been knocked away from the article and from the tag, the tag serves as a means for holding the end 22 of the billet, while the second article is being forged. If three articles are to be produced from one billet, the tag formed during the forging of the first article would be cut off before the forging of the second article.
