Abstract

589,461. Bearings. VANDERVELL PRODUCTS, Ltd., GREEN, D. F., SALMON, J. E., and MALLET, N. P. March 19. 1945, No. 6893. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In a bearing with a steel backing, an intermediate metal layer of intermediate hardness, and a thin layer of anti-friction metal, the intermediate layer is of copper-tin alloy (1 to 15 per cent. tin) electro-deposited on the steel backing. The steel backing is anodically cleaned at 80 to 90‹C. with a current density of 40 amperes per square foot in a bath of sodium meta-silicate, sodium phosphate, sodium carbonate, and sodium hydroxide, and then anodically etched as described in Specification 566,538, [Group XXXVI]. The copper-tin intermediate layer is then electro-deposited at a cathode density of 100 amperes per square foot at 70‹C. from a bath of copper cyanide, tin as stannate, sodium cyanide, and sodium hydroxide, using anodes of the desired alloy or of carbon. The deposit may be 0.02 inches thick and after annealing at 700‹C (if required) and final machining the coppertin intermediate layer is etched as described in Specification 573,636 and the thin anti-friction surface layer electrodeposited. An " antifretting " laver may be applied to the outer surface of the steel backing as described in Specification 556,248. The anti-friction layer may be an indium base alloy containing copper, a copper-cadmium, a lead-antimony-tin, a coppertin (of different composition from the intermediate layer), or a lead-indium alloy. Specifications 535,571, 537,475, [Group II], and, in the Provisional Specification, 554,355, [Group XXXVI], 556,247 and 566,360 also are referred to.
