Abstract

588,987. Fluid-tight bolted joints. DANKS & CO. (OLDBURY), Ltd., E., WHITE F. G. S., and DURRANS, A. March 13, 1945, No. 6248. [Class 122 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A fluid-tight bolted joint, Fig. 1, has two flanges 3, 4 connected by the bolts 7 and in the thicker flange 4, supplied with the chamfer 8 and the annular recess 9 undercut on its inner radial surface 10, is held the gasket 12 with a tongue 13 projecting radially inwards which seats one side on the face 11 of the flange 3 and is acted upon the other by the pressure of the fluid in the vessel and held in fluid-tight relation with the flange 3. In a modification where the joint is subjected to both internal pressure and vacuum the annular recess is undercut on its inner and outer radial surfaces to form a dovetail section and an annular groove is cut on the outer radial edge of said recess to accommodate a further outwardly directed tongue on the gasket which also seats on the adjacent flange. The annular groove is connected to the atmosphere by equally spaced annular slots in the large flange so that air pressure assists the seating of the outer tongue when the pressure in the vessel is below that of the. atmosphere. In a further modification, Fig. 3, a ring 23 containing the double-tongued gaskets 12<1>, 12<11> is gripped between identical flanges 3, 4 and the annular grooves 18<1>, 18<11> are connected to the atniosphere by slots 19<1> and 19<11> respectively. The joint may be applied to other means, e.g. a . cover joined to another member which may or may not be flanged.
