Abstract
585,399. Toothed gearing. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. April 20, 1944, No. 7357. Convention date, May 28, 1943. [Class 80 (i)] A gear drive, for turbine-driven locomotives and other purposes, comprises a low speed gear 1 meshing with a pair of pinions 2, 2<1> on spindles 14, 14<1>. Each spindle 14, 14<1>, has a pair of gears 3, 3<1>. A second spindle 15 has two pinions 4, 4<1>, each meshing with a gear 3 and with a gear 3'. The spindle 15 has a gear 5 gearing with a high speed pinion 6 on a spindle 16 to which the driving turbine is connected. Thus the torque is transmitted from the pinion 6 to the low speed gear 1 through two parallel paths. As shown, the gear 1 is pressed on to a quill 7 surrounding an axle 8 carrying the locomotive driving wheel 9. The intermediate gears 3, 3<1>, may be of flexible type in which the tooth rim is connected to the hub by a plurality of springs.
