456,404. Turbine locomotives; driving- gearing. ZOELLY, H., 9, Traugottstrasse, Zurich, Switzerland. March 6, 1936, No. 6811. Convention date, March 7, 1935. (Classes79(i) and 79 (ii)] Comprises a gas or steam turbine locomotive in which a change-speed gear is provided between two stages of fixed-ratio toothed gearing, so that the gear ratio of none of the change-speed gear trains exceeds 1 : 5. In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 applied to a two-speed gear a pinion 22 on the shaft of a turbine 21 drives a change-speed shaft Z<4> through reversing and reducing gear comprising a gear 23 in constant mesh with the pinion 22 and movable so as to gear with either a wheel 24 on the shaft Z<4> or a wheel 34 in mesh with wheel 24. The shaft Z<4> carries two slidable gear-wheels 25, 26 of which 25 can mesh with equal wheels 27, 29 on shafts Z<5>, Z<6> and 26 with equal wheels 28, 30, the power being divided between the shafts Z<5>, Z<6> to permit of narrow gear-wheels 27 ... 30 being used between the locomotive side frame members. The second reducing gear is formed by pinions 31, 32 on the shafts Z<5>, Z<6> which gear with a wheel 33 on a shaft 40 driving the track wheels 36 through cranks and coupling rods. In a modification, one of the shafts Z<5>, Z<6> is dispensed with, the reversing gear is combined with the changespeed gear, and an idler wheel is provided between the turbine shaft pinion and a wheel on the first shaft of the change-speed gear.
