498,893. Turbine locomotives. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV & MASCHINENFABRIK. July 15, 1937, No. 19614. Convention date, July 18, 1936. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (ii)] Each driving axle of a steam turbine locomotive is driven by a separate transversely disposed turbine or group of turbines through the intermediary of a change-speed gear. In the Figure, the shaft a<1> of a turbine a carries pinions c, c<1> meshing with gears d, d<1> loose on a counter-shaft i having a pinion e meshing with a large gear f connected by means of a flexible coupling g with an axle h. The gears d, d<1> are of different size, and can be alternatively connected with the counter-shaft i by fluid pressure or electromagnetically actuated friction clutches d<2>, d<3> to allow of change in the gear ratio. Means may be provided to prevent the gear being changed except when the steam is cut off. In Fig. 2 (not shown), pinions at either end of the shaft i mesh with large gears at either end of a sleeve surrounding the axle h, and each gear is connected with a driving wheel by means of a flexible coupling, In Fig. 3 (not shown), the pinion e and gear f are disposed outside a driving wheel, and the gear f connected directly to the wheel. For reverse running, there may be an additional turbine k adapted to drive the shaft a, through a clutch k<1>, or a reverse gear may be interrelated between the turbine a and shaft a<1>. The turbines driving the several axles may be connected together in multi-stage fashion. Thus, with three driving axles, a high pressure turbine may drive one axle and exhaust into two low pressure turbines driving the other two asles.
