585,366. Photographic developing powders. KODAK, Ltd. July 26, 1944, No. 14275. Convention date, April 22, 1943. [Class 98 (ii)] A photographic developing powder comprises in admixture in the dry state one or more organic developing agents, a water-soluble ingredient of weak alkalinity and an acidic stabilizing component. Elon, hydroquinone, p-phenylenediamine sulphate, p-aminophenol sulphate, glycin or metol may be the developing agent. The alkaline ingredient may be an alkali borate, carbonate or phosphate. Sodium carbonate is preferred either as the monohydrate or as sodium sesquicarbonate dihydrate. Suitable stabilizers include alkali meta-bisulphite, phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, benzoic anhydride, salicylic acid, o-benzoic sulphimide and phthalimide. A wetting agent and an aldehyde bisulphite, e.g. sodium formaldehyde bisulphite may be added to the powder composition. A preferred admixture comprises elon and/or hydroquinone, sodium carbonate monohydrate, potassium metabisulphite and/or phthalic anhydride, sodium sulphite and potassium bromide. The stabilizer and basic compound are first mixed together and the developing agent and other substances then added and admixed. In another method, the. stabilizer is vaporized and allowed to diffuse into the powdered alkali. The compositions are stated to remain unchanged when dry for a period exceeding eighteen months.
