Abstract
556,360. Photographic processes. BAKER, T. T. Jan. 28, 1942, No. 1213. [Class 98 (ii)] In a process wherein a sensitive emulsion is sprayed on to a surface and wherein the emulsion may be exposed and even developed and fixed while still in a wet gel state, the gelatin used for the production of the emulsion contains the optimum or maximum practicable proportion of gelatin B, i.e. that constituent of gelatin responsible for the gelling power. The support, which may be of metal, wood, plaster, concrete, or other smooth structural material, may be given a preparatory coating of a solution of synthetic resin or cellulose ester containing a white or coloured pigment, e.g. extended titanium dioxide. The gelatin may have a high melting point and low viscosity, and the emulsion may be sprayed at 30‹ C. A wetting agent, e.g. saponin, "Alborit," or " Lissapol" (Registered Trade Mark), may be added to the emulsion and to the preparatory coating. Alcohol, acetone, or suitable metallic salts may be added to the emulsion to produce low viscosity. The rate of development may be increased by adding to the emulsion cane sugar or similar material. In an example, the emulsion is prepared by adding silver nitrate solution containing sufficient ammonia to dissolve the silver hydroxide first precipitated in a fine stream at 27‹ C. to water containing soft gelatin, ammonium bromide, and potassium iodide. After 1 minute, an aqueous solution of silver nitrate at 50‹ C. is added, and after 15 minutes hard gelatin is added and dissolved. The emulsion is set in ice-water and the gel is shredded, washed, melted and digested. Alcohol and chrome alum are added. The emulsion may be stabilized by the addition of hydrobomic acid, and either sodium nitrate and citric acid or sodium biborate and boric acid. A wetting agent may also be added. The wet emulsion is exposed and sprayed with developing and fixing solutions. The emulsion may be colour developed. Specification 429,173 is referred to.
