Abstract

562,666. Photographic light-sensitive materials. HALDEN & CO., Ltd., J., and HOLDEN, J. March 6, 1943, No. 3686. [Class 98 (ii)] In a light-sensitive material having a coating of a silver halide or other insoluble silver salt, better adhesion between the light-sensitive coating and the support is attained by using an aqueous dispersion of a synthetic resin with or without a water-soluble colloid to provide a substratum layer between the light-sensitive emulsion and the support. The support may be fabric, paper, film, glass or metal. The resin may be polyvinyl acetate or chloride, a polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid resin, polyacrylic esters or homologues (e.g. methyl methacrylate), or polystyrene. The support may be water-proofed and in the case of paper may have a baryta coating. Water-proofing may be effected by treatment with cellulose esters (e.g. nitrate, acetate, propionates, butyrates, or higher fatty esters) or with cellulose ethers, preferably with addition of plasticizers or with synthetic resins (e.g. phenolformaldehyde, alkyd, cumarone, ureaaldehyde, or polyvinyl resins). The coating solution or solutions may contain wetting agents (e.g. alkyl naphthalenesulphonates, sulphonated fatty alcohols or saponine) or softening agents (e.g. methyl, ethyl, polyvinyl alcohol, or acetone). The coating solution or solutions may contain filter dyes, particularly where the coatings are applied to both sides of the support or where multi-layer coatings are used. Part of the gelatin may be replaced by' other water-soluble colloids such as methyl or glycol cellulose or casein. In an example, water-proof translucent or transparent tracing paper or cloth is coated on one or both sides of the support with a composition comprising aqueous gelatine solution to which has been added ammonia solution, a synthetic resin dispersion, methyl alcohol and aqueous saponine. According to the Provisional Specification, the resin dispersion may be incorporated in the emulsion.
