585,248. Sewing-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Nov. 14, 1944, No. 22409. [Class 112] The back-rest of a shoe-inseam sewing- machine is formed as a part-spherical button 22 mounted to rotate about an axis substantially parallel to a tangent to the needle when the latter is in the work, so that vertical and swing- ing movements of the shoe are facilitated and relative sliding between the shoe and back-rest is minimised. In the form shown, the button 22 has an integral shank rotatable in a flanged bush 18 which is adjustably mounted in a verticallyslotted lateral lug 16 at the end of the usual back-rest' support. Pressure on the button is taken by'a small shoulder at the back of it bearing on the flange of the bushing 18. While the shank portion of the shoe is being sewn the shoe bears against the button below its axis, as shown, while during the sewing of the toe portion the contact point is above the axis of the button.
